Estimates

Quantify card complexity or size using a predefined scale. Each space chooses one scale, and every card can carry an integer estimate value from that scale.

Scale Options

Cartographer ships with four predefined scales. Pick the one that matches how your team thinks about sizing:

  • Exponential: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. Doubles at each step, so large items stand out.
  • Fibonacci: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8. The classic agile scale, where gaps widen as complexity grows.
  • Linear: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Evenly spaced, for teams that prefer simple sizing.
  • T-Shirt: XS, S, M, L, XL. Familiar labels that map to Fibonacci values internally (1, 2, 3, 5, 8).

The scale is set per space, so different spaces can use different scales. Changing the scale does not erase existing card estimates. The stored integer values stay in place, so you can switch between scales without losing data.

Enabling Estimates

Open your space’s Settings tab and choose a scale from the Estimates section. Once enabled, estimates appear in the card editor, the right-click context menu, and as badges on story cards.

Set the scale to Disabled to hide estimate UI across the board. Card values are preserved so you can re-enable later without losing data.

MCP Tools

When creating or updating cards via the MCP server, pass the estimate field with an integer value from the active scale, or a t-shirt size (XS, S, M, L, XL). Use null to clear a card’s estimate.

The projects_get_card_details response includes both estimate (integer) and estimateLabel (display string, e.g. “M” for t-shirt scales).
